WWI Gewehr 98s and WWII Kar 98s are pieces of history now, and I would leave them intact, or restore them if possible. There are some good smiths still around, but nowhere near as many as their used to be. Sadly, most of those kinds of guys are either dead or retired. It was as much a hobby for many on them as it was to their customers. the country used to be full of guys who could do great work, and they did it cheap(ly). But not for less than you can buy a good factory sporter. If you want to build a custom rifle, you still can, for a price. Today, there is no economic reason (or ability) to do this. We also converted (sporterized) Springfields, Enfields, Krags, and even Arisakas. Had a lot of fun doing it, and made some nice, and a couple of fine rifles. In the 60s and 70s we modified/converted quite a few Mauser 98s into sporters, it was cheaper then new Remington/Winchesters bolt guns.
